Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multi-Point Wireless Links
As a brand synonymous with fixed wireless broadband communications, Ubiquiti airMax provides solutions for short, to long-range connectivity, as Point-to-Point (PtP) and Point-to-Multi-Point PtMP) set-ups.
Point to Point can be either as single antenna to a single recipient, as illustrated in the first image below, or as two (or more) antennas connected together as a series of Point-to-Point links spanning a larger distance, as illustrated in the second image below.
A PtMP set-up can obviously also include a combination of PP/PtMP antennas, depending on what’s required and where the main signal originates. Distances covered can be anything up to 15+ kilometres.
Point to Point Links
There are several equipment options for different scenarios (listed below), and they’ll use different frequencies (2,4GHz, 5GHz, or 24GHz), and form factors, to suit environmental interference, Line of Sight, EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) limits and other factors
Point to Multi Point Links
PtMP performance depends on both sides of the link. If you want to reach long distances, you must choose the right Base Station AND the right Customer Premises Equipment for each case.
Base Station
The base station is usually located on the top of a tower, building or mast with the height determining maximum coverage. When planning the base station, it’s usually ideal to plan for an antenna with the smallest coverage that still covers the desired area. Antennas with a wider beam width, covering a wider zone reaching more stations, may be more susceptible to interference, resulting in decreased scalability and performance
